I am pretty sure the moment I broke out this paint was the day I decided to create this website too. I LOVE Benjamin Moore Super White! I love it and I am in love with it! I never thought I would have a relationship with paint, but I sure do. I am still trying to find the Pinterest post of somebody who mentioned Benjamin Moore Super White to say thank you. What I do remember is there are so many shades of white available it will truly make your head spin. I read a lot of people’s opinions and suggestions and it helped me narrow it down to the hidden gem Super White! Not too hot, not too cold, just perfect. I loved white and I know some of the other shades may have been fine for me but this house would not be what it is without Super White.
We actually started with a modern grey. It is sort of a greige I suppose they call that. It was a lesser expensive paint and I still like the color. We had it painted in the back bedroom and hall bathroom in the beginning of the project. I call it the moody bathroom with deep grey walls, black painted wood blinds, dark blue penny tile, and mixed metal hardware. The finish of the paint is grainier, for lack of a better description. It does not have a great sheen on the finished product. We had planned originally to paint the entire house in this paint and color. We had bought a couple huge 5 gallon buckets so we had plenty! We got a mid-tier grey and then one shade lighter to go in the office and laundry room.
I took over painting in the laundry room. It is a small room and since we installed cabinets there wasn’t very much space to have to paint. First ceiling I painted as well. First time I realized I really hate painting a ceiling! I don’t care how people suggest to paint the ceiling correctly, what direction to start and go etc. I get up there and paint as far as I can reach in every direction! Left/right, back/forth repeat and reach as far as I can. But back to the grey paint I am not mentioning the brand because it really is ok. There is nothing wrong with the color and it paints fine. But, I could not get my mind off of doing white.
I decided to let Michael know I was painting the kitchen wall white. One wall, where the window is. The kitchen had a color scheme of dark to bright white from floor to ceiling. The floors are distressed dark wood, lower cabinets stained grey, upper cabinets white paint, ceiling BMSW Pearl, and all window and wall trim BMSW semi-gloss. I wanted a bright white feeling kitchen (but just middle to ceiling). This was in fact supposed to be our dream kitchen!
When you are working on sheetrock and trim and things it is easy to look at only what is in front of you at that time. Well, when we moved into the living room I realized the wall from the kitchen coming into the living room had no separation to divide colors. Michael built an arch in the doorway beside the kitchen counter seating. At this point I told him I was painting the front wall only all white and it would be beautiful with the cypress green front door we picked out. He agreed it would look nice with that door! So, only the front wall of the living room would be white and the rest of the “great room” would be grey.
I decided on Benjamin Moore Super White. I did not want the yellow tones even though they are beautiful in other homes. I was going for a modern, rustic farmhouse feel and really wanted clean crisp colors. I also didn’t want too much grey in the white because it looks darker without direct sunlight. Reading about white paint I learned there is not one true bright white. Every variation of white has a touch of yellow, grey, pink and other tones in it. I think I found the truest white I could in BM Super White. It literally has only a dot of black in the entire gallon (give or take).
When I started painting with this paint I almost cried. It may have been because we had been staring at sheetrock on the walls and ram board on the floors for almost a year and a half, perhaps. However, this paint is so amazingly beautiful. It paints on almost in a silky way. This paint made it fun to paint! And Thank God because I had committed to the whole house; ceiling, trim, walls, doors and all. I came to Michael and said “So, I’ve been thinking about switching from the grey to this white.” He had been pretty happy with the grey idea. Until he saw the BMSW! He said “I agree.” And Done!
From there forward, we used Benjamin Moore Super White in Pearl finish for the walls. BM SW Semi-Gloss for all trim. Then later added the Aura for the exterior Kitchen Door and French Doors. It is a step up in quality but to be honest as nice as the Pearl was I really wanted to see what a few more dollars gives you. Plus, the doors get the most traffic from people and dogs. And in addition, they receive moisture from outside and that can never be good for paint. I still have not painted these doors as I may be waiting to have something really fun to look forward to!
Who knew painting could be life changing
The other reason I went with white paint was because the hallway had always been very dark. There was not good lighting and it is a typical ranch style home with one long hall to all the bedrooms. The BM SW brightened up the entire space in the hall and adding a large semi-mount light gave it some character and a bright light option. even though it took a lot more time we finished all the hall door frames with craftsmen trim to carry the craftsmen theme throughout the rest of the house. After painting the trim with Super White the entire hallway looked and felt like you were somewhere totally different. It is bright and cheery now and you can light it up!
I am not the fastest painter, but I am a perfectionist. I must have gone through a ton of brushes, rollers, foam brushes, guards, tape and ugh! My first piece of advice, and nobody ever told me, is to buy some mineral spirits! I am the worst at washing out brushes and this product ended up saving more brush purchases. My other piece of painting advice is tape everything. I actually got where I could freehand some trim but I do not suggest it. When it comes to tape I used all of it throughout the painting process. Blue, green, and purple. The blue ended up ripping my ceiling paint off all around the room. No fun! The green is really strong and scared me of doing the same although it never did. I ended up with sensitive purple in the end and it removed easily and the paint did not run. I would probably start over with just purple if I did it all over again. I used a 1 1/2″ angle brush for all brush work because I could fan it well and also hit edges better and paint smaller trim.
The guest bathroom addition became BMSW as it sits right off the backside of the main room. It was formerly the back door off of the old kitchen. We needed another full bathroom option so this became the second full bath. I went with a rustic farmhouse design to coordinate with the kitchen and the rest of the house. The Super White looks really nice with the painted black industrial pipe hardware and round black wood mirror. Plus, you can see into this room off the main area so it blends well with the rest of the house.
The only problem with having beautifully painted walls and trim is keeping hands off of it. I am guilty too. So far, there are no issues with finger prints and it wipes off easily. So, if you are like me and are having a hard time picking out a white paint color hopefully this blog helps. You can’t go wrong with Benjamin Moore Super White!
